After the disturbing revelations about the party and the knowledge gained from their conversation with the Nothiks, the party takes their leave of the pair of creatures.
They make their way towards the door they heard voices behind and ignored earlier. Poor stealth rolls for three out of the four (Menny, Vega, and Theamen) alerted the room to their presence. Only Thok (who had reached the door) saw the slot open and a crossbow slide through. It fired on the party!
Roll Initiative!
Thok, not surprised by the aggression decided to "Thok" on the door, critting against it. It buckled, breaking inwards.
Fog rolled out from the now open door.
He felt a chill creeping up his spine (10 points of cold damage) and 13 points of cold damage to Vega who had been close.
A figure stepped out, wearing robes and lacking an eye. The socket crystallized and he used magic to restrain Vega.
Another figure, a rogue named Gordol rushed out, dealing a total of 19 points of damage to Menelwen in two hits. She staggered. He hip checked Theamen.
Vega remained restrained.
Thok managed to take down the wizard with one attack. He moved, dealing an additional 14 points of damage to a reaver.
Because it was a surprise round, Gordol got to go again. He darted in, attacking Menelwen twice again. The first missed but the second ran her through, dropping her to the ground. Gordol used the rest of his movement to retreat.
Theamen saw it, looking at Vega. He tossed the druid a potion. "Take care of her." And he rushed off eerily fast and ended up at the guy (Haste). His first attack missed, but the second with green flames coating the sword struck true.
Thok was fighting the Reavers. He grinned, easily handling them with his shark-tooth sword. "Hi I'm Thok. I'll be killing you today, Be sure to tip your waitress before you die. She likes to get her gold without blood on it."
Thanks to Vega feeding her the potion and a quick heal, Menelwen was up. She moved to get a view on where Theamen and Gordol were fighting. The rage on his face was terrifying. She spent a Magic Missile charge to slam into the rogue.
Theamen indeed was pissed. He used his movement to end up in front of the retreating guy, blocking his escape. The sword just moved. Gordol staggered, barely hanging in there.
The Reavers attack Thok! To little effect.
Vega placed Flaming Sphere behind the Reavers, positioned carefully so as to not hit Thok.
Thok in turn, takes the other Reavers down. He managed to peek down the hallway Theamen had dashed. He saw the rage.
Menelwen winced, spending another Magic Missile to drop Gordol.
With all enemies dropped, Theamen grabbed Gordol, dragging him back.
"He's dead." She told him.
"I know." The grip around Gordol's throat loosened as Theamen dropped him. "We can't leave bodies."
The solution? Feed them to our Nothik friends.
It was more or less agreed that they wanted a long rest after that fight. But there were guys sleeping in the other rooms. The ones that had been copper'd. "Let's slaughter 'em."
Very carefully, the door was unpennied.
It was still locked however. An eye and hook lock on the inside. "We can't even unlock it."
Menelwen took a small blade, and finagled it to unhook it.
Menelwen took a small blade, and finagled it to unhook it.
The room was dark. Even breathing could be heard from in there. The figures were asleep.
Menelwen stayed outside, lacking the strength to end them. Vega and Thok went in.
"It's humane. I'm using Primal savagery to slit their throats." Vega said. He stood over the first figure, a cultist dreaming culty dreams. He snuggled his shark-bear. Then his throat was slit by Vega.
Systematically, Vega and Thok killed the cultists.
Once the coast was cleared and a room selected to barricade/rest in, it was decided to retrieve Henry to rest with them.
Level up! Level 6 achieved!
The party awoke, well rested.
They head across an elegant stone bridge that spanned the canal. Vega, after resting felt stronger! More virile! More Pep! (Menny kept closer to Theamen).
After crossing the bridge, they noticed a burned out hole to a room with a door on the far side. Upon closer inspection, a weird language could be heard. A cracking sound and chewing followed. The party decides to not bother with that.
They head north, following the turn in the passage.
They head north, following the turn in the passage.
There was another door, the sound of breathing from the other side. More sleeping people...Vega and Thok step in to murder the.
As they stepped in, Thok's armor heated up, dealing damage to him.
Roll Initiative!
A large black scaled Lizard folk (9 and a half feet tall), gripping a trident attacked Thok. The first hit was a miss, the second crit, skewering him for 39 points if piercing damage.
Other lizard folk joined him. They were standing back, throwing javelins. Menny took a javelin (Crit! 8 points of damage). Thok attacked. Menny used Burning Hands, sculpting around Thok. Theamen used Cloud of Daggers on the large black scaled Lizard folk (named Tornscale).
Between the heated armor and the trident attack, Thok went down. Second wind kicked in, allowing him to take down Tornscale. Six Lizardfolk remained. He gasped, pointing at the door on the other wall. To a caster. Before dropping again to the heated armor.
Vega used Moonbeam, dealing damage to the enemies.
Menelwen sized up the room, dropping a sculpted Fireball to clear the room.
Theamen managed to get Thok up.
"Turn it off, turn it off!"
Four more lizard folk rushed in.
The caster was just hanging out in the door. Thok managed to shoot at him, breaking the concerntration. Vega heals Thok and moves his Moonbeam.
Menelwen followed the path of his attack, using Cloud of Daggers on the caster in the door.
Theamen missed one attack, causing the lizard to laugh. He beheaded the laughing lizard, flicking the now disembodied head into the Moonbeam.
The Cloud of Daggers obliterates the caster.
A lizard attacked Vega, an between Theamen, and Thok they managed to take down the rest of them.
Vega used mass cure wounds on the party before walking to the bodies of the lizards. "...I wonder how they taste..."
"Are you seriously thinking of eating that?" Theamen asked.
"No...?" Vega munched on rations, almost embarrassed.
Thok turned to him. "So you're a cannibal." Just a flat tone.
Theamen, still not used to Thok's deadpan tone laughed.
"I'm not sure I follow."
"He means you eat sentient beings." Theamen clarified.
"Huh."
"That's the secret they pulled from you." Thok recalled from the Nothik conversation.
"Huh, I never thought of it that way." The druid frowned.
"I have a rule," Theamen started. "I don't eat things with a language."
Vega shrugged. "I lost myself in a wild shape once and just got a taste for it."
"I've met other druids like that, and none of them ended up like that." Theamen frowned.
"That's how I got these." Vega pointed at his horns.
"Maybe you should stop wild-shaping...forever." Theamen said, rather perturbed. "What shape were you when you did that?"
"Well, the antlers would suggest a deer..." Menelwen pointed out.
"No, two separate times." Vega pointed out.
"Perytons had them too." Theamen added.
The conversation ebbed. An uncomfortable pause. Menelwen looked at Thok. "Want to tell us who you really are?"
"Some people have a past they don't want brought to light."
"The Nothiks brought it forward-" Vega argued.
"The past is my own. When you become a warden you leave your old life behind." Thok narrowed his eyes.
"Will you ever tell us?" She asked.
"If it is necessary, if it endangers someone. I keep looking forward." A pause. "Speaking of pasts, you. Have you harmed an innocent? A young one?"
Her spine stiffened. "It was a thought that did not come to pass. He's still alive by the way. As far as I know."
Thok shrugged, turning to Theamen. "So Theamen, it was mentioned that there's blood on your hands."
"It...is not always the actions you take, but some of those you do not. I joined a brotherhood, to fight by their side and protect them. If they die in a point that by being there I could have protected them, it was as though I had slit their throats myself. I have had family die...my older brother...I was expected to follow in his footsteps. To take his place. I didn't...and now...I never could."
He looked at the group.
"..It's not just enemies that I need to worry about. My order will want me dead. My father..." he revealed that his father was the Head Priest of Mystra. "will want me and anyone around me dead. I'm a deserter. If it ever comes to it...you will denounce me."
"I would not denounce you." Menelwen shook her head.
He looked at her. "Your battle prowess has improved greatly. But imagine being surrounded by more like me. I would much rather you live through the encounter."
"...I would rather die at your side than live a thousand years without you."
Theamen gave her a sad smile.
Theamen and Thok step away to have a private conversation after that one ended. Vega wandered away, checking things out.
When they finished their thought, Theamen said something to Menelwen quietly in Elvish. (Secret just between the two of them).
There was talk about the orders and vows that bind those to their orders, an understanding to keep Vega from eating corpses.
"Well, I learned two things no paladin of Mystra should know. My father called me, I think it was an abomination."
"I'm sorry, but your father is an asshole." She squeezed his hand.
"Heh, no need to apologize for him. He certainly doesn't."
"I hope you would be open to new paths." Thok said.
Theamen looked between him and Menelwen. "Well...I've done three things I shouldn't have. I'm open t new paths."
She blushed and grinned.
"I'm Thoking off." He stepped away. Theamen laughed, breaking the tension.
The party moved on.
Vega turned into a snake, sneaking along to scout out for danger.
"He keeps turning into things that consumes things whole. It's getting disturbing." Theamen spoke to Menelwen in Elvish.
The scouting reveals three reavers and a person in robes in a large room.
"Cast Haste on me. I'll get Senor Spell person. You stay here. I'll make myself the target of the spell person." Thok told Vega.
"I can cast Haste as well. We can double team the spell caster." Theamen said. Then paused, turning to Menelwen. "Not what I meant sweetie."
Vega was confused.
Menelwen arched an eyebrow at him and patted Vega's arm. "Don't worry, not meant for you."
Haste was cast and they rushed off. The attacks started.
The mage fell in the surprise round as well as one of the three reavers.
Not wanting to be left out, Menelwen ran, using a Magic Missile charge against one. Theamen finished that one.
The one remaining reaver dropped the box he was holding and rushed towards the gong. He hit it. Thok rushed over and ended him, stopping the sound.
For a moment, there's silence. Nothing but the sound of the waves from the underground lake splashing over the shore.
It became louder.
A huge head emerged from the water, looking around. A dragon turtle.
"You needed something...? Did something happen...?"
"No. Someone hit it by mistake." Vega assured her.
"Oh...I was hoping...nevermind..." Her voice was so depressed. They found out her name was Bronzefume. She had a crush on Shatterkeel who promised her that she would be sinking ships, and building a horde.
Menelwen hugged her (as much as she could).
"We're talking to a dragon turtle...a depressed dragon turtle." Theamen spoke, stunned.
Vega offered her 50 gold pieces for her hoard.
She accepted it. "Thank you for being so nice." Bronzefume retreated into the water, leaving the party to consider their next moves...
